combustion engine including a turbocharger, a catalytic converter in an exhaust duct, anda throttle valve in an intake duct, wherein the apparatus comprises a bypass passagebypassing a turbine of the turbocharger, a waste gate valve which controls the amount ofthe exhaust gas passing therethrough, an actuator for actuating the waste gate valvewhich has first and second pressure chambers separated from one another, and aswitching valve which selectively connects the second pressure chamber to the

atmosphere or to the intake vacuum area, the first pressure chamber being connected tothe delivery pressure area of the turbocharger by means of a conduit which is connectedto an atmospheric pressure area via a restriction.
