By then the other students had settled at their desks. With knees shaking, I walked up to the front. For a moment I stood there, 53 . Then I began and kept going. I recited my poem all the way 54 !

Every child should be taking part in at least four hours of sport and PE at school by the end of the decade, Tony Blair said yesterday.

As The Times disclosed last month, the Prime Minister doubled the target for provision in schools. He said an extra & 519 million would be spent to improve coaching and strengthening links between schools and local sports clubs.

Mr Blair said that he expected every pupil to have at least two hours of PE and sport during curriculum time by 2010, and to be offered a further two hours outside of school hours.

“This investment will give children new opportunities to take part in sport,” he said. “Sport is not only important in its own right, teaching kids how to win, lose and be part of a team. It is also important in tackling ( 解决 ) obesity( 肥胖症 )in young people and can act as an antidote ( 矫正法)to the antisocial behaviour of a minority.” Mr Blair’s announcement represents a significant toughening of the demands on schools. The previous target was to provide two hours of “high quality” sport both within and outside the timetable each week by 2010.Mr Blair made clear that this would now have to be provided within the timetable, with a further two hours available before or after school. A government survey of 2.1 million children in 6,500 schools in April found that only 62 percent were doing two hours of sport now. Only half of pupils in primary schools met the target. The Prime Minister put on tracksuit trousers and sneakers to jump through hoops in an agility test as he launched the policy at Waverley School in Southwark, southeast London, one of only four all-girl sports colleges in England. He said, “You’ve got to bring back school sport. It’s still very, very important.” Mr Blair dismissed as “daft( 愚笨 )’any school opposed to competitive sports, as were many during the 1970s and 1980s. He said, “Most people understand life is competitive and competitive sport is fun. You don’t have to end up going crazy, but to be in a team and compete is fine and we want to bring that back.”

56. According to the article, Blair has paid special attention to___________.

A. pupils’ curriculum

B. pupils’ interest in school sport

C. giving children more opportunities to take part in sport D. strengthening links between school and local sports club.

57. Every child should be taking part in at least four hours of sport and PE by 2010________. A. every week B. every day C. before or after class D. in schools

58. It can be inferred that sport is_________to the public order.

A. opposite B. advantageous C. dangerous D. troublesome 59. The underlined phrase “its own right” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to__________.

A. teaching kids how to win, lose and be part of a team

B. acting as an antidote to the antisocial behaviour of a minority C. strengthening children’s sense of competition

D. giving children new opportunities to take part in sport

You may have seen stars with tails and you may also know that they are called “comets”. In ancient China, people believed that comets were bad signs. However, scientists say comets may have been important to the start of life on the Earth. They have been trying for years to know more about comets.

Now NASA is going a step further. On July 4th, NASA’s Deep Impact( 深度撞击 )spacecraft will attempt a brave meeting with the comet Tempel 1, which is flying through space at tens of thousands of kilometers per hour.

Scientists know comets are made of ice and dust they want to know more about our solar system. Deep inside, comets hold some important secrets about how our solar system was formed.

Previous observations of Tempel 1 taken with ground- based telescopes show the comet is dark and oblong( 长方形 ), with a width of a few kilometers. It is a black comet about 8,000 football pitches( 球场 ).

NASA’s Michael A’ Hearn, leader of Deep Impact Program, says its aim is to find out what is inside the comet and how comets are made.

The Deep Impact spacecraft was up on January 12, 2005. On July 4, as it comes close to Tempel 1, the spacecraft will separate into two parts. The impactor will place itself in the path of the speeding snowball and will smash into it. This is supposed to make a small hole. The second part will travel around for a ringside view.

Besides, at least 30 telescopes around the world, including Hubble( 哈勃望远镜 ), will be watching the dramatic impact. By studying the material blown out of the comet, this global network of telescopes will collect a list of the raw ingredients that went into making the planets in our solar system. 60. Europe produces around 20 million tons of sugar each year-----much more than it consumes. Producers enjoy guaranteed prices some three times of those on world markets. High tarffs(关税 )keep cheaper imports out while subsidies( 补贴 )allow producers to sell millions of tons on export markets each year.

So unveiling this reform the EU’s Agriculture Commissioner Frans Fischler said it recognized the unpleasant truth that an artificially high sugar price in the EU was not economically viable( 切实可行的 )and was bad news for development policy and consumers too.

The new proposals would reduce by about a third the guaranteed price that EU producers receive. The proposals would also cut quotas ( 配额) or the amount of product eligible( 符合条件 )for subsidies. That should ultimately lead to a drop in production.

The new system would maintain preferable terms for sugar exports from certain African, Caribbean and Pacific countries------although development agencies claim this seriously disadvantages in other nations.

The plans were immediately criticized by sugar producers----the German Sugar Industry Associaion warned that the proposals threatened the entire future of the EU sugar industry.

Oxfam and the environmental group---the WWF said that the proposals would not reduce poverty or increase environmental standards. They warned the moves would allow continues export selling in large amount to developing countries, thereby undermining( 损害 )poor farmers’livelihoods.

68. Which of the following is not the reason for European sugar producers to enjoy growing sugar?

A. The price of sugar is three times of those sold on world markets. B. The land is very rich and fit to grow sugar.

C. The tariff is too high so that cheaper sugar won’t be imported

Ⅵ、书面表达(25分)

阅读下面短文,然后按要求写一篇 150 词左右的英文短文。

Every afternoon hundreds of thousands of youths fill internet cafes, switches on a game console (游戏机), or sit down to enter fantasy worlds. I’m talking about video games. These games can be fun and exciting, but we need to look out when this pastime becomes an addiction.

Video games can also be a bad effect on younger children who may be watching. Many video games are violent and the object in most of them is to kill other players. This does not send the right message to the children who need to be told that violence is not acceptable and need to be taught how to deal with situations maturely(成熟地). Even if we do need to sit down and play a violent video game, we need to make sure that it is not affect the younger people around us.

Playing a computer game in our spare time is not a bad thing. Games can be a great way to relax after studying, or to improve our creativity. However, games should not become the focus of our life. We cannot be addicted to them. Meanwhile we must learn to control ourselves and spend our time more wisely.

写作内容:

1)概括短文的内容要点,该部分大约 30 个词左右;

2)就 “青少年该不该玩电子游戏” 这个主题发表你的看法,至少包括以下内容要点, 该部分字数大约 120 个词左右。 a)电子游戏有何优点和缺点;

Video games, which the youth like very much, can make us relaxed or even help our creativity, but getting addicted to them can have bad effects.

On one hand, video games, as a kind of exciting entertainment, can make us get relaxed after long-time studying and can practise our ability of fast thinking and responding. On the other hand, the exciting games always get youth lost in them. Then, the young students would pay more attention to playing virtual games instead of focusing on study, which without doubt will ruin their future. Given this, our teachers and parents are strongly against playing video games, which often unexpectedly have opposite effect. Therefore, I think our teachers and parents should allow us to play some video games under the instructions on the basis that it’s not in the way of studying.
