When a person passes through the customs(海关) between two countries, he would be questioned by a customs inspector(检查员). If a person brings in goods of great value, the inspector may ask him to pay taxes on them. Some people try to hide the valuables they have with them so that they will not have to pay these taxes. But customs inspectors are hard to fool.

Inspector Joseph Koehler has worked for the U.S. Customs Service for years. One day a group of passengers arrived on a flight from Belgium.

Koehler took special notice of one of the women among them. At first he did not know what made him pick her out of them—the woman's baggage was made of a purse and two suitcases. She showed no sign of fear when Koehler opened them. Yet Koehler could not rid(使…摆脱) himself of the feeling that something was wrong.

Suddenly he knew what it was. The woman was too tall. This woman's height didn't seem right somehow. Then it was found that the bottom parts of her shoes were filled with something. The inspector opened them. A handful of diamonds fell out on the floor. More jewels were found under a false bottom in one of her suitcases. Their total weight was 3,387 carats. It was one of the largest diamond hauls(缴获) ever made by the U.S. Customs.

Are you carrying too much on your back at school? You're not alone. Back experts in the United States are worried that young students are having back and neck problems as a result of carrying too much in their backpacks (schoolbags).

\"It hurts my back when I run,\" said Oberlin Reyes, a student in Virginia. \"It's hard to get up the stairs with my backpack, because it's too heavy.\"

Oberlin is among students whose backpacks were weighed for a week in a recent study.

They had regular backpacks with two straps(带子) to carry them, but a number of students with heavy loads had switched to rolling backpacks (which have wheels and can roll on the ground). Shirley Park, whose backpack weighed 10 kilograms, said she changed to a rolling backpack because she was starting to have back pain. How much is too much? Experts say students should carry no more than 10 to 15 percent of their own body weight.

A few students had one suggestion to lighten the load: less homework. P.S.(附) Doctor's suggestions:

● Lighten the load. Clean out binders(活页材料) and take home only the books you need that night.

● Wide straps are better. They send out the weight over your shoulders more evenly(均匀). And be sure to wear both straps rather than hanging the pack over one shoulder. ● Pack smart. The heavier things should be packed closed to the back.

● Bend both knees when you pick up the pack, and don't just bend over at the waist(腰). 77. The expression \"switched to\" in the text perhaps means . A. started to use B. turned to

C. caught up

九、阅读与表达(问答式)(共5小题;共10分)

Young children don't have the skills or knowledge to stay safe in heavy traffic. The following tips(忠告) will be helpful for you to keep your children safe in heavy traffic. Children learn about road safety by watching others. As parents, make sure that you always set good examples. Your children will follow you and think it's OK to do like you. Teach your children to pay attention to traffic lights when you cross the road together with them. This helps them understand when it's safe to cross. Make sure that you walk between your children and traffic, and hold their hands all the time.

When your children are a little older, you can start to tell them the importance of traffic knowledge. Let them start to understand the reasons why they need to be so careful. Talk with them about road signs and traffic rules.

Ask your children to play in a safe place. Never let them ride bikes on the road without an adult present at rush hour.

The most important thing you can do is to keep your children from getting hurt, so parents encourage them to follow traffic rules. After knowing about traffic rules, they'll volunteer to obey them. In this way, they'll be careful enough to keep themselves away from danger. 根据短文内容,完成下列小题。

83. Do young children know how to stay safe in heavy traffic? 84. Who should set good examples to young children on the road? 85. When do young children never ride their bikes alone on the road? 86. When will children volunteer to obey traffic rules? 87. What is the passage mainly about?

I'm Lucy Holmes and I'm here today to tell you about my work. People ask me why I decided to start a new magazine. Well, I've been working for newspapers and magazines for many years. I've always dreamt of starting my own magazine, not because I want to be rich but because I want to do something different. And now I've done it! It is different from other magazines and I'm sure it's going to be successful.

So what's the magazine like? It's the same size as the local weekly newspaper, but it doesn't carry news and it doesn't report on events as they happen. I think this is the important difference. You can buy it in all the usual places you would buy newspapers. It comes out each Thursday.

The first part of the magazine is a \"What's on\" guide. It tells the information about everything that's happening in the city over a seven-day period. There are music and film reviews, and information about special events. There are also reports on restaurants. But these are not advertisements. They are the honest opinions of our reporters.

That's one part of the magazine; the other part is the articles. We want to write about the lives of the people in the town. They may be famous or not but they have all done something interesting such as

developing a new business. We hope to interview a lot of different people. So, anyone who's interested in...

W: OK, let me look up the information on the computer. Oh, I've got one for you. M: Thank you. Where is the house? W: It's No. 7 in Park Street.

M: Sounds great. How much does it cost? W: It's very cheap. It only costs 9859 dollars. M: That's a lot of money for me!

W: It's worth every penny. It's convenient there. You can walk to the supermarket and the bank in five minutes. The most important thing is that there is a very good school along the street for your children. M: Well, I like the house, but I can't decide yet. My wife must see it first.

W: It doesn't matter. You can see the house every day except Wednesday and Sunday. M: Thanks a lot. W: You are welcome.
