13、 When we think of food farming we usually think of green fields in the country, outside the city. Sam

Chee works on a very different type of farm, in the center of the Canadian city of Toronto. “We grow fruit,

vegetables and herbs,” says Sam. “But not many people know the farm is here. You can’t see it from the street. We’re on top of an office building, 50 meters above the ground.”

Rooftop farming is becoming popular in cities like Toronto, New York and London. The roofs of buildings are often just wasted space, but this space can be used for growing good fresh food, right in the middle of the city. Sam explains how it works. “We grow everything in big boxes—there are hundreds of them. We catch rainwater to water the plants when the weather is dry.”

The rooftop farm where Sam works belongs to a restaurant called Green Garden, on the ground floor of the building. The farm produces about half the restaurant’s fruit and vegetables. Sam believes that the rooftop farm is what makes Green Garden special. “We help to keep food production local. We don’t need to transport this food from anywhere and that saves energy. It’s better for the environment.”

The food from the rooftop is fresher too. “When the fruit and vegetables are ripe we can pick them and use them right away. They taste better when they’re really fresh,” says Sam. “I hope that there will be more rooftop farms in the city soon. It could be the farming of the future.” 1.Green Garden’s rooftop farm is . 14、Cows that are named and treated with a “more personal touch” can increase milk production by up to 500 pints a year.

The study, by the university’s School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, involved(包括) 516 farmers across the UK.

The study found farmers who named their cows got a 54% higher production than those that did not give their cows names. They’re part of the family,” he said. “We love our cows here and every one of them has a name. All of us regard them as ‘our ladies’ but we know every one of them and each one has her own personality.”

Dr Catherine Douglas said, “What our study shows is what many good, caring farmers have long since believed. Our data suggests that UK dairy farmers regard their cows as intelligent beings(智能动物). They are able to experience a range of emotions(情感的领域).”

Ukuleles(尤克里里)look like small guitars, but unlike guitars, they usually only have four strings. Ukuleles come from Hawaii(夏威夷)and make bright, happy sounds. They make people think of island vacations and summer days. Even though ukuleles come from Hawaii, they are now popular around the world. One of the reasons is because they are fun and easy to play.

Playing a ukulele may be easy, but making one is not. Ukuleles must be made step by step. First the head and neck are glued to the body. As soon as the glue is dry, the fingerboard is glued onto the neck. Once(一旦)that is dry, the ukulele maker sands the fingerboard to make it smooth. Next, the bridge is glued onto the body. The bridge holds the strings and allows them to make sounds. After the bridge is in place, the ukulele can be painted and decorated. The next step is to connect tuning heads to the top of the ukulele. Then finally the strings are put on the instrument. Now a player can make music. 1.According to the article, what kind of music does a Ukulele make?

A.Sad music. B.Fun music. C.Difficult music. D.Unpopular music. 2.How is a Ukulele made according to the article?

A.In an easy way. B.Like a big guitar. C.In several steps. D.With some strings. 3.The underlined word \"sand\" probably means . A.撒沙 B.制作 C.烘干 D.打磨

“The letters are all from sea ports (海港). The writer was on a ship when he wrote the letters,” I replied. “Very good, Watson! And John’s enemy is in London already!” “Well, I hope they won’t kill young John,” I said.

But they did. The next morning, we read in the newspaper that a policeman found him die near Waterloo Station. Holmes was very angry about it.

“He came to me for help and those men murdered him! I’m going to find them, if it’s the last thing I do!” he said to me, and he hurried out of the house.

At night, when he came back, he was tired, but pleased, he said, “I know the names of John’s enemies! And now I’m going to send them a surprise! This will frighten them!” He took five pips from an orange and put them in an envelope (信封). On it he wrote “

“I’m sending the pips to captain James Calhoun. His ship is called the Star. He and his men are sailing back to Georgia, USA.”

“How did you find him, Holmes?” I asked.

“Ship’s papers,” he said, “I’ve looked at hundreds of them today. Only one ship, the Star, was in the three ports at the right times, and this morning the Star left London to sail back to Georgia. I found out that the captain and two of his men, all Americans, weren’t on the ship last night, so I’m sure they killed John.
