The General Idea of the period:
In this period of learning, students will learn that the verb-ing forms can be used like nouns. Students are expected to learn how to use the verb-ing forms in different situations. As the grammatical learning tends to be comparatively boring compared with the learning of an article, I try to use a part from a soap opera named “Gossip Girl” which is not only closely related to the theme of the unit but also helps consolidate the usage of my teaching.
Teaching aims: Knowledge aims:
1. To help students learn that verb-ing form can be used as a subject, as the object, or after the preposition.
2. To help students learn that verb-ing form can be used after such verbs as “admit, dislike, and imagine”.
3. To help students learn that the verb-ing form can be used after such common phrases as “cannot help, put off and keep on”.
4. To help students know that both a verb-ing form and a to infinitive can be used after the following words: continue, prefer, begin, hate, like, start, love.
5. To help students know the difference between the verb-ing form and know the difference between the verb-ing form and to infinitive form after the following words: forget, regret, remember, mean, try, go on. Ability aims:
1. In the period, students can use what they have learned to finish an email and do more exercises. 2. In the period, students’ self-learning ability are enhanced through their sumamary and real mastering the usage of the verb-ing forms.
3. In the class, students are encouraged to cooperate with their partners and group members in order to master the usage of the verb-ing forms. Emotional amis:
1. Their spirit of exploration and collaboration can be advanced. 2. Students’ self-learning motivation is emphasized.
Teaching Importance:
1. Help students learn that verb-ing forms can be used like nouns.
2. Encourage students learn how to use the verb-ing forms in different situations.
3. Make students compare the to infinitive with the verb-ing forms and practise the usage by finishing some exercises.
Teaching Difficulties:
1. It is difficult to get all students involved in grammatical learning.
2. It is challenging to make them really master the usage of these verb-ing forms in different situations.
3. It is hard for students to master all these usages through one period of learning,

Teaching procedures: Step 1 Review
1.1 Have students review the usage of to-infinitive.
Review the usage of the to-infinitive which can be used as a subject, object, object complement, attribute, predicative, adverbials. Students could use some examples to show their mastery of the usage of the to-infinitive.
To find a best friend is difficult. = it is difficult to find a best friend. (the subject of a sentence). I need to sleep for eight hours every night . (the object) I have a very important meeting to attend. (attribute) His intention was to cheer me up. (predicative)
My dad arranged some swimming lessons to surprise me. (adverbial) 1.2 introduce the learning of verb-ing form.
Step 2 Presentation
2.1 Have students go over the Point 1. Ask students to discuss the function of the verb-ing forms in each following sentence.
Talking about problems often helps. (as the subject) Swimming is good for your health. ( as the subject)
He often practice playing violin at the weekend. (as the object) I love swimming in the sea during the summer. (as the object) Thank you for helping me. (after the preposition)
I kept fit by swimming every day. ( after the preposition)
2.2 Have students go over Point Two. Tell students that we use a verb-ing form, not a to infinitive after the following words. admit, dislike, imagine, delay, consider, mind, understand, avoid, enjoy, practise, miss, finish, keep, suggest Makes students to make sentences with these words following by verb-ing or find such sentences in the text.
2.3 Have students go over Point 3. Some common phrases are used with verb-ing forms. would you mind Would you mind helping me opening the windows? can not help look forward to feel like can not stand put off I can not help wondering how things go on like this? I look forward to seeing you at my birthday party? I feel like talking with you about our problems. She can not stand separating with him any more. I have to put off shopping for a while. it is no use/good It is no use crying over spilled milk. keep on He kept on refusing to answering the phone. 2.4 Make students go over point 4 and points out that there is no difference when we use a verb-ing form or an infinitive after the following words continue, prefer, begin, hate, like, start, love
2.5 Some verbs can be followed by a verb-ing form or a to-infinitive , but with some difference in meaning or usage. We need to make sure to use the correct form.
Remember ______(book) tickets for the cinema on your way home? (to book) Waving your hand means ______(say) goodbye in China. (saying) I didn’t meant ______(hurt) you by saying that.(to hurt)
I regret ______(inform) you that you have failed the exam. (to inform)
Step 3 Consolidation
3.1 Identify the function of verb-ing form in bold. The passage is exacted from one of the most popular American soap opra Gossip Girl.
As many people says, making friendship is easy but maintaining friendship is difficult. We could not avoid hurting our friends’ feelings because of doing things wrong to our friends. What will you do to mend our friendship? Let’s move to see what Serena and Blair do when their friendship is in danger.
In Gossip Girl, Serena and Blair are best friends. They enjoy being with each other. They like being invited to parties together. But one day something goes wrong. Serena accidentally has an affair with Blair’s boyfriend Nate, which absolutely ruins and destroys their friendship. Even Serena admits making mistakes, Blair is mad at Serena and tries to revenge Serena in every possible way for a long time. Blair even disgraces Serena in public and she even beats Serena on her face on the playground. But in the end, revenging Serena doesn’t make Blair happy at all. Blair finds Serena out and they two are friends again.
3.2 Finish the email on the page 11 by using the correct form of verbs.
Step 4 Homework Assignment
Have students do Part C2 on page 92 in the workbook, so they can have one more chance to practise the usage of the to infinitive and verb-ing forms.
