Catching a Cold: What It Is and How to Beat It

Have you ever had a runny nose, scratchy throat, and felt really tired and achy? If so, you probably had a cold. Colds are super common, especially in kids. While they don't feel good, the good news is that colds usually go away on their own after a week or two. But what exactly causes a cold, and what can we do to get over one faster? What Is a Cold?

A cold is a viral infection that affects your nose, throat, and respiratory system. It's caused by tiny germs called viruses that can spread easily from person to person. There are over 200 different viruses that can cause a cold! The most common is the rhinovirus.

How Do You Catch a Cold?

Colds spread in a few different ways. The main way is through tiny droplets that come out of your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough. If someone else breathes those droplets in, they can catch the cold virus too. Yuck!

You can also catch a cold by touching a surface that has cold viruses on it, like a doorknob or toy that someone sneezed on. If you then touch your eyes, nose, or mouth, those viruses can get into your body and make you sick.

Sometimes you might catch a cold just from being around someone who's sick and breathing the same air as them. But don't worry, colds aren't spread through things like sharing food or drinks.

Why Am I Sniffly and Sneezy?

Once the cold virus gets inside your body, it causes all those familiar cold symptoms like: A runny, stuffy nose Sneezing and coughing A sore, scratchy throat Mild fever and chills Headaches

Feeling really tired

Your body's immune system is actually causing a lot of those symptoms as it tries to fight off the virus. The fever, for example,

is your body's way of trying to kill the virus by making your body temperature too hot for it to survive.

So while the symptoms don't feel good, they are signs that your body is working hard to get rid of the virus and make you feel better soon!

How to Get Over a Cold Fast

Unfortunately, there is no cure for the common cold since it's caused by a virus, and viruses have to run their course. But there are things you can do to ease the symptoms and get over a cold a bit faster:

Rest up and drink lots of fluids like water, soup, or warm tea with honey to soothe your throat. Your body needs extra energy to fight the virus.

Use cough drops, cough syrup, or throat spray to coat and numb your scratchy throat.

Take medication like acetaminophen or ibuprofen to reduce fever, headaches, and body aches. But be sure to check with your parents first!

Use saline nose drops or sprays to help relieve stuffiness and clear out mucus.

Put a humidifier in your room to add moisture to the air, which can loosen mucus.

Suck on ice pops or chips to help numb throat pain. Get lots of sleep and avoid activities that are too tiring for your body while it's recovering.

Most importantly, be patient! With time and rest, your cold symptoms should start getting better in a week or so. How to Avoid Getting a Cold

You can't always prevent catching a cold, since cold viruses are everywhere. But you can lower your chances by practicing good hygiene habits:

Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water, especially before eating and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

Don't touch your eyes, nose, and mouth too much to avoid transferring viruses from your hands.

Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow to prevent spreading viruses.

Stay away from people who have colds to avoid breathing in their germy droplets.

Keep your body healthy by eating nutritious foods, exercising, and getting enough sleep.

The stronger your immune system, the better it can fight off viruses trying to make you sick!

So there you have it - the down-and-dirty on the common cold! While they may be a pain, colds are a normal part of life for kids. By understanding what causes them and taking good care of yourself, you can get over a cold more quickly and stay as healthy as possible.
