背景知识
1.Noah Webster诺厄·韦伯斯特
美国词典编纂家。他是正式提出“美语并且为之做了很多工作、产生重要影响的第一个人。在韦伯斯特1828年出版的《An American Dictionary of the English》(美国英语词典)里,除了采用不同的拼写方式、强调单词的美国发音和美国用法,并且收入许多美国特有的词汇以外,还从美国人的著作里摘引了很多例句。在他的词典和著作以及其他一些文章里,韦伯斯特所表达的都是同样一个意思,那就是这个国家所说的英语,应该是一种“American thing”(美国国粹)；应该从独立的、美国的角度来看待它,并且承认它有自己的发展道路。
英国英语是由15世纪初英格兰的一种地方语言发展而来的,而美国英语是由17世纪初英国殖民者带至北美的英国英语演变成的。
现在使用英国英语作为母语的国家和地区有大不列颠群岛、澳大利亚、新西兰、南非和西印度群岛;使用美国英语作为母语的国家主要有美国和加拿大。
英国英语和美国英语是同一种语言,它们几乎没有语法上的差别,只是在语音、语调、词汇、句子表达方面有一些差别,但这种差别还不足以影响使用英国英语的人和使用美国英语的人之间的交流。因为二者无论是过去还是现在,毕竟都是同一种语言,而且将来也不会发展成两种语言。随着英美两国及全世界人民交流的日益频繁,两者将更易于融合和理解。
